Harlan Coben’s Shelter, set amidst the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, follows teen protagonist Mickey as he unravels the mystery behind his father’s death in a car accident. Mickey, along with his friends Spoon and Ema, discovers that the accident was not as it seemed and is connected to something bigger. While the characters are the show’s strongest element, some aspects feel cliché and tired. The show also struggles with an uneven tone, mixing supernatural elements with modern issues. Additionally, it attempts to tackle serious subjects but ends up feeling sanitized. The convoluted narrative and generic visuals make it forgettable. Overall, it falls short of being an elevated and unique show.
