The Big Picture
Barbie continues to dominate at the box office, earning $33 million domestically this weekend and positioning itself as a potential highest-grossing movie of the year. Oppenheimer, a three-hour historical drama, impresses with a domestic total of $264 million and a worldwide sum of $648 million. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem is slowly but steadily making an impact at the box office, with a $94 million worldwide total and $15 million earned domestically in its second weekend.
Barbie spent yet another weekend at the top of the box office, with Greta Gerwig’s blockbuster becoming the first title to remain at the top of the domestic chart for four weeks in a row since The Dark Knight accomplished it in 2008. Speaking about Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer took the second place of the weekend once more, with the “Barbenheimer” pop culture event remaining strong approaching the one-month mark since its debut. In the meantime, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Mutant Mayhem continues nunchuck-ing its way into making an impact while the summer movie season nears its end.
The final blockbusters of the season are flying toward the big screen, with Blue Beetle set to premiere on August 18, followed by Gran Turismo on August 25. Things are not looking great for one of the final movies in the DC Universe before James Gunn’s Superman: Legacy kickstarts a brand new era of action, but Ángel Manuel Soto’s hero origin story could go against estimates with good word-of-mouth. After that, spooky season will be upon us, and The Nun II will be one of the first titles to frighten audiences this fall, before Five Nights at Freddy’s and The Exorcist: Believer have the opportunity to do so.
Barbie Continues to Party
With almost $1.2 billion earned at the worldwide box office, Barbie continues to impress with the run that will likely position it as the highest-grossing movie of the year. The position is currently held by The Super Mario Bros. Movie with $1.35 billion, but with the way that Gerwig’s story about a sentient doll has been performing, that could change soon enough. Barbie earned $33 million at the domestic box office this weekend, which is an impressive amount considering it’s the film’s fourth round in wide release. If it continues to remain in place like that, it could end up becoming Warner Bros.’ most successful release to date.
Oppenheimer Keeps Making an Impact
With $18 million obtained this weekend at the domestic box office alone, Oppenheimer has now a domestic total of $264 million to its name. The worldwide sum for Christopher Nolan’s latest project now stands at $648 million — unprecedented for a three-hour-long historical drama with an R rating. Cillian Murphy’s performance as the man behind the atomic bomb once again attracted audiences to theaters, establishing the movie as one of this summer’s greatest hits. It remains to be seen just how far Oppenheimer can go.
The Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Are Back
While paling against Barbenheimer’s billion, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is still carving out its own place at the box office. Taking into account its moderate budget, Mutant Mayhem is off to a slow but steady pace at the box office with a $94 million worldwide total. Still sitting in double digits in its second weekend, hopefully, the animated movie will impress the executives at Paramount Pictures as it opens in more international territories. Mutant Mayhem brought in $15 million domestically during their second bout, and maybe by next weekend, they’ll hit triple digits as the final month of the summer season rages on.
