Ridley Scott is one of the few directors keeping the historical epic and period drama genres alive. He has directed numerous films set in the past, based on real events or inspired by history. His upcoming projects include a Napoleon movie and Gladiator 2. However, not all of his historical epics are equal. “Exodus: Gods and Kings” is considered his weakest effort, while “Robin Hood” is forgettable and unnecessary. On the other hand, films like “The Duellists,” “1492: Conquest of Paradise,” “Kingdom of Heaven,” “The Last Duel,” and “Gladiator” are praised for their compelling narratives, action sequences, and visual appeal. “Gladiator” is regarded as Scott’s best epic and won Best Picture in 2000.
