An elephant named Muthu Raja, gifted to Sri Lanka by Thailand over 20 years ago, has returned to Thailand for medical treatment after allegations of abuse at a Buddhist temple. Accompanied by a team of veterinarians and mahouts, the elephant was flown from Sri Lanka to Chiang Mai province. He will be quarantined and undergo rehabilitation at the Thai Elephant Conservation Center. The elephant’s poor health, including being underweight and having abscesses, was highlighted by a Sri Lankan animal rights group. Thailand had conducted a preliminary investigation and sought Sri Lanka’s approval for the elephant’s return.
