Scientists from the Schmidt Ocean Institute discovered a new octopus nursery during a deep-sea expedition off the coast of Costa Rica. Using a robotic submersible, the researchers captured footage of previously unexplored seamounts teeming with unique marine life. The nursery, located over 9,000 feet beneath the sea surface, highlights the vast amount of knowledge still to be gained about the ocean. The newly found octopus nursery is near a low-temperature hydrothermal vent, suggesting that some octopus species intentionally brood their eggs around these vents. The expedition also documented other deep-sea critters and emphasized the need for protecting the deep sea from human activity.
