Yesterday, Reuters reported that the World Health Organization’s International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) will label aspartame as “possibly carcinogenic” next month. However, this does not mean that people need to throw out all sugar-free products containing the artificial sweetener. The IARC only assesses the hazards of a substance, not the actual risk. Other agencies, such as the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), assess the risk and have deemed aspartame safe for consumption. The FDA has even reviewed over 100 studies on aspartame. The ongoing review by both the IARC and JECFA has caused confusion and concern, but until food safety agencies state otherwise, there is no need to panic.
