It’s rare to find a feature film director turn back to their roots in the short film format, but in 2010 Spike Jonze created one of his best works with I’m Here, a brilliantly tender 31-minute sci-fi romance starring Andrew Garfield as a robot in love. The film, based on Shel Silverstein’s The Giving Tree, explores the relationship between technology and love. The robots in the film are marginalized and oppressed, which adds depth to the romance. By the end, the protagonist sacrifices his own body to save his love interest, raising questions about the nature of their relationship. Jonze effectively conveys emotions through the robot’s facial expressions. Overall, I’m Here is a powerful and emotionally resonant short film.
