After years of testing and delays, Virgin Galactic’s first commercial spaceflight, Galactic 01, is set to launch today from its Spaceport America facility in New Mexico. The mission will carry a three-person crew from the Italian Air Force and the National Research Council of Italy aboard the VSS Unity. The flight will last for 90 minutes and include 13 scientific experiments, with one passenger wearing a smart suit to measure physiological responses and biometric data. If successful, this could lead to more launches and eventual profitability for Virgin Galactic. The company plans to launch Galactic 02 with a private crew in August, followed by monthly suborbital flights for $450,000 per seat.
