The women’s identities were not disclosed, and their faces were covered in released photographs. The arrest was made by Lt. Col. Akkaraphon Kaewkiat on charges of working without proper permissions and exceeding visa activities. The women violated the conditions for staying in Thailand as their visas did not allow employment. They were taken to Sakhu Police Station, and if found guilty, they could face fines, deportation, and potential barred entry into Thailand. The incident is not surprising given multiple reports of Chinese citizens being arrested for unlawful employment at the airport. The influx of organized Chinese tourist parties has not yet returned to pre-pandemic levels, although independent Chinese travelers still contribute significantly to the number of tourists in Phuket.
