Thailand’s State Railway (SRT) is shifting its focus to procuring electric trains rather than diesel locomotives in an effort to modernize and improve efficiency. The altered proposal gained approval from the National Economic and Social Development Council, and the SRT’s modernization plan with a 1.5 billion baht fund allocation is set to be presented to the new administration. The SRT also plans to add 182 new carriages to its fleet. Additionally, the SRT is considering new procurement methods such as financial or operating leasing. The railway is also expanding its cargo division by purchasing 946 container wagons. Thailand is also forging partnerships to advance electric vehicle battery technology.
