“Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom” is often considered a messy and flawed entry in the Indiana Jones franchise. Even director Steven Spielberg agrees, calling it “too dark,” “subterranean,” and “horrific.” The film tackles issues such as Orientalism and sexism, and its violent content led to the creation of the PG-13 rating. The film’s attempt at being a horror movie feels out of place with the established Indiana Jones canon, and the treatment of the female lead character, Willie Scott, has been criticized. However, the film does excel in thrilling action sequences and visually stunning moments. Harrison Ford and Ke Huy Quan are seen as the standout performers in the film.
