In a bid to address the issue of unsolicited explicit content, Instagram is testing a new feature that would restrict text-only direct message (DM) requests to users who don’t follow the sender. If the recipient accepts the message request, the sender can then send photos, videos, and additional text messages. Currently, users can send unlimited DM requests including text and images. The trial is part of Meta’s efforts to increase safety and parental supervision on its platforms. The move comes as research suggests that women frequently receive inappropriate and abusive messages on social media platforms.
