The European Commission has announced a cyber attack on its cloud infrastructure hosting the Commission’s web presence on the Europa.eu platform. A threat actor claiming to be behind the attack was able to access over 350GB of data before the issue was addressed. The Commission disclosed a breach in February that also impacted employee data. Both breaches are considered less severe than the Salt Typhoon hack that impacted US telecommunications companies in 2024. In response, the Commission introduced a Cybersecurity Package in January 2026 to address similar issues and outline new ways for EU states to deal with potentially risky companies in their telecom supply chains.
