New geckos discovered in Battambang caves

Cambodia’s Environment Ministry has announced the discovery of several new species in mountain areas, emphasizing the ecological importance of these landscapes. The study documented wildlife found in over 60 caves across 10 sites in Battambang province. Researchers identified seven new species for science, including geckos, snails, and millipedes. The study also highlighted the presence of globally threatened species, underscoring the need for conservation efforts. Officials warned of increasing threats to these ecosystems from mining, tourism, forest fires, and illegal hunting.
