Iranian pilgrims are feeling welcome again at this year’s hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, following a landmark reconciliation between the two countries. For seven years, tensions between the Sunni and Shiite powers had made Iranian visitors feel unwelcome at the event. However, after Riyadh and Tehran repaired relations in March, the atmosphere has changed dramatically. Iranian pilgrims are now expressing feelings of comfort and safety. The reconciliation has also had a positive impact on the wider region, with Saudi Arabia engaging in talks with Iran-backed Huthi rebels in Yemen and repairing relations with Syria’s leader.
