The US Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York has charged three people with illegally exporting NVIDIA GPUs to China in violation of the Export Control Reform Act. The individuals, Yih-Shyan “Wally” Liaw, Ruei-Tsang “Steven” Chang, and Ting-Wei “Willy” Sun, allegedly circumvented export control laws by creating fake orders for servers with NVIDIA chips and secretly sending them to China. The scheme involved paying a logistics company to repackage the servers, falsifying records, and staging dummy servers for inspection. This is not the first incident of smuggling NVIDIA products, indicating ongoing demand for AI hardware.
