A 33-year-old Chinese man in Chiang Mai is suspected of filing a fake theft complaint in an attempt to obtain a police document for an insurance claim before leaving Thailand. Xiao reported a bag containing a camera, iPad, clothing, cash, and yuan was snatched by two men on a motorcycle. However, police found no evidence supporting the crime as described and later discovered Xiao had left for Hong Kong using the same passport he reported stolen. The incident led police to believe the theft report was false and possibly filed for insurance compensation.
