Although the new Black Mirror series features mind-bending sci-fi episodes, there is also a significant amount of horror in “Demon 79”. The episode tells the story of Nida, a sales assistant in a 1979 North England shoe shop, who summons a demon named Gaap. Gaap informs Nida that she must kill three people to prevent the apocalypse, and provides her with glimpses into the past and future lives of her potential victims. The episode includes a nod to Stephen King’s novel “The Dead Zone”, with similarities in the plot involving a right-wing politician and the protagonist’s determination to stop them.
