TikTok, owned by China’s ByteDance, is giving parents more control over their teens’ viewing habits with new content filtering controls. The “Family Pairing” feature allows parents to filter out videos containing specific words or hashtags while allowing kids to still access the platform. This feature combines existing tools that already disabled direct messages, set screen time limits, and filtered unwanted videos. The new controls also promote transparency by alerting kids to their parents’ selected filters and giving them the option to opt-in or not. In addition, TikTok plans to launch a global Youth Council to better understand users’ experiences and improve safety measures. The platform has faced criticism for exposing children to harmful content, and both the UK and US are considering new regulations for online safety.
