Officials from the Internal Trade Department in Thailand have seized 27 tonnes of smuggled garlic, valued at about 2 million baht. The garlic was confiscated at a wholesale market in Khlong Luang district, and the driver was taken into custody for transporting the goods without the necessary documentation. The director-general of the department stated that the garlic importer would also be investigated for unpaid import duties. The aim of the crackdown is to protect Thai garlic farmers from unfair competition from cheaper imported garlic. The department has also purchased 10,000 tonnes of garlic, shallots, and onions this year to stabilize prices.
