The Thai Rice Exporters Association is urging the new government to avoid manipulating rice market prices and instead focus on developing new rice varieties to stay competitive with other exporting nations. The association’s honorary president, Chookiat Ophaswongse, highlighted the importance of reducing costs for farmers, increasing yield, and cultivating rice that aligns with market demand. Chookiat also emphasized the need for government intervention in developing irrigation systems, such as canals and reservoirs, to prevent a decline in Thai rice exports. Nipon Puapongsakorn, a distinguished fellow at Thailand Development Research Institute, echoed these sentiments, suggesting that any support policies should come with conditions to promote sustainable farming practices.
