Former prime minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who is currently serving an eight-year prison sentence, may be granted further royal clemency on important occasions, according to outgoing Justice Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam. Thaksin’s sentence has already been reduced to one year through a commutation granted by the King. Wissanu stated that well-behaved and severely ill prisoners serving one-year sentences are often granted Royal pardons, but he does not know if Thaksin will be among them. Thaksin is currently being treated at the Police General Hospital and may be returned to prison or have his remaining sentence suspended. Thaksin’s children expressed gratitude for the royal commutation, vowing their father’s loyalty to the monarchy.
