Thailand has reported its first cases of the Omicron sub-variant HK.3, with two family members testing positive in Bangkok. Both individuals experienced mild symptoms and have since recovered. The Department of Medical Sciences is monitoring Covid sub-variants in Thailand through whole genome sequencing. The most prevalent variant is the Omicron’s XBB.1.16, followed by XBB.2.3 and XBB.1.9.1. Dr Supakit Sirilak, the head of the DMS, cautioned against conclusions on HK.3’s transmission speed and severity due to limited data. He suggested waiting for a clearer situation.
