The caution comes after a case where a patient diagnosed with influenza took antibiotics and subsequently suffered stomach pain and diarrhea. The incident revealed an X-ray of the patient’s abdomen filled with gas, a side effect of unnecessary antibiotic use. The patient had been prescribed the antibiotic Augmentin even though they had influenza. The overuse of antibiotics can kill beneficial bacteria in the intestines and lead to disease-causing bacteria proliferating.
