CK Power Plc (CKP) and Bangkok Expressway and Metro Plc (BEM) have formed a partnership to introduce the first solar-powered mass transit rail systems in Thailand. The collaboration aims to use solar energy to power the MRT Blue Line and MRT Purple Line, covering a total of 71 kilometers and 54 stations in Bangkok and Nonthaburi. Over a span of 25 years, 452 gigawatt-hours (GWh) of power will be supplied to the two MRT lines, representing 12% of their total power consumption. CKP will provide engineering expertise and maintenance services, with design work set to be completed by January 2023. Construction begins in February of the same year, and electricity delivery is expected to start in August 2023. The partnership will eliminate 300,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and support Thailand’s goal of achieving net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2065. The agreement includes the utilization of six locations spanning over 106,000 square meters to harness solar energy. CKP sees the potential for this partnership to accelerate Thailand’s transition to renewables if other mass transit systems adopt similar strategies. This initiative aligns with CKP’s goal to double its generating capacity to 4,800MW by next year, all based on renewable energy sources.
