Forty-two years after being taken from his mother’s arms at birth and told he had died, Jimmy Lippert Thyden finally met his birth mother, María Angélica González, in Chile. Thyden, a criminal defense attorney in Virginia, began his search for his birth family after reading about reunions facilitated by Chilean nonprofit Nos Buscamos. It was discovered that tens of thousands of babies were taken from families during the Pinochet regime. Nos Buscamos has organized over 450 reunions, and Thyden’s DNA test confirmed his Chilean heritage. Despite his adoptive parents’ support, Thyden acknowledges that not all adoptees have positive experiences.
