The Pheu Thai Party has nominated Sutin Klungsang as defence minister, but Prime Minister-elect Srettha Thavisin downplays expectations of military reform. Pheu Thai had made military reform a key policy, proposing downsizing and tighter controls on arms acquisitions. Srettha refuses to confirm any last-minute changes in the Cabinet line-up, but sources suggest pressure from the “red shirt” faction led to the sidelining of Gen Nattaphon Narkphanit. Sutin is seen as politically moderate and acceptable to the military. Previous prime ministers have also served as defence ministers.
