Japan expressed concern over Chinese harassment of its citizens following the release of treated radioactive water from the Fukushima nuclear power plant. The Japanese government called the actions “extremely deplorable” and urged China to provide accurate information on the safety of the water. Reports have emerged of nuisance phone calls and online appeals to boycott Japanese products in China. Despite the boycott campaign, Chief Cabinet Secretary Hirokazu Matsuno stated that the Japanese economy is unlikely to be significantly affected. Japan’s Foreign Ministry has advised citizens in China to be cautious and refrain from speaking Japanese loudly in public.
