Royal Thai Police arrested a Nigerian man and 13 Thai individuals for running a covert romance scam that deceived hundreds of victims in Thailand out of over 800 million baht in the past four years. The victims were approached on social media by scammers posing as attractive foreign women, who claimed to be American soldiers in Syria. After gaining their trust, the scammers asked the victims to pay taxes and other expenses for alleged parcels sent to Bangkok. Once the scammers received the money, they disappeared. The gang leader, Ezeneche Uzochukwu Jerome, had previously been charged with a love scam in 2018. The police seized several items and arrested 14 suspects during the operation. The legal charges and penalties for the perpetrators have not been officially reported yet.
