The 16 rebel Democrat MPs who voted in support of Srettha Thavisin’s prime ministerial candidacy maintain that they are still part of the opposition unless invited to join the Pheu Thai-led coalition government. Democrat deputy leader Det-it Khaothong clarified that the party did not have a resolution specifying how the 24 Democrat MPs should vote on Tuesday, except for a call by acting party leader Jurin Laksanawisit to abstain. Det-it stated that the group, consisting of new-generation Democrats, made a last-minute decision to support Srettha. They believe that they should not be constrained by the political rivalries of the party’s “old guard.” The party’s lack of unity is evident as it has failed twice to hold meetings to elect new leadership.
