Former construction tycoon and politician, Srettha Thaivisin, was elected Prime Minister of Thailand by the Parliament on Tuesday and will govern with the support of pro-military parties, despite his election promise not to do so. Srettha and his Pheu Thai party justified the alliance with the military-linked parties for the sake of forming the government after a political deadlock. Srettha stressed the urgency of improving the economy and reducing inequality. The vote for prime minister also coincided with the return of former Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra, who was ousted by the military in 2006.
