A self-driving car and a fire truck collided in San Francisco, prompting the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to request a reduction in the number of self-driving cars on the road. The car, operated by Cruise, a subsidiary of GM, was reportedly struck by the fire truck while entering an intersection on a green light. The DMV has asked Cruise to decrease its robotaxi fleet by 50% as it investigates the incident and other recent concerns. Cruise agreed to the reduction and will have no more than 50 driverless vehicles in operation during the day and 150 at night. The DMV can revoke Cruise’s permits if its investigation deems the self-driving cars to be a safety risk.
