Cruise will be temporarily reducing the number of autonomous vehicles in San Francisco as investigators look into recent incidents involving its fleet. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) asked Cruise to cut its fleet in half after one of its robotaxis collided with a fire truck at an intersection, causing non-life-threatening injuries to passengers. In addition, another incident involved a Cruise vehicle getting stuck in wet concrete. The DMV has asked Cruise to limit its driverless vehicles to 50 during the day and 150 at night during the investigation. Cruise’s General Manager explained that the robotaxi identified the emergency vehicle and its sirens but had difficulty predicting its path. The DMV’s request comes after the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) approved Cruise and Waymo to charge fares for fully driverless rides in San Francisco at any time of day.
