Governor of the State Railway of Thailand Nirut Maneepan has announced the closure of 693 unauthorized railway crossings across the country following a tragic accident in Chachoengsao province. The accident involved a freight train and a pickup truck at an unrecognized railway crossing, resulting in eight deaths and three injuries. Data from the State Railway of Thailand shows that 44% of incidents involving trains between 2005 and 2021 occurred at illegal crossings. In addition to closing unauthorized crossings, the SRT plans to construct additional walkways and encourage the use of a crossing app for reporting issues.
