Nirvana’s Biggest Song of All Time “Smells Like Teen Spirit” Was Inspired by This Alternative Rock Band

“Smells Like Teen Spirit” is Nirvana’s most renowned track, although Kurt Cobain grew to resent it due to its mainstream success overshadowing their other work. Originally intended to be a pop song and inspired by the Pixies, it became a defining anthem of grunge upon its 1991 release. While the song is credited with popularizing grunge, Cobain admitted it was akin to a cliché riff. Although he appreciated the impact it had, he felt it did not represent his artistic intentions and preferred many of his other songs, like “Drain You.” Cobain’s complex relationship with the song ultimately shaped his public persona.
